The Part-by-Part Breakdown

CPU: Go AMD Ryzen, Go Used

The AMD Ryzen 5 3600 is the move. As of early 2026, you can find them used for $60–$80 on eBay. It's a 6-core, 12-thread processor that paired with a mid-range GPU will not bottleneck you at 1080p gaming. I've run it myself. It's solid.

If you can stretch to $90–$110, the Ryzen 5 5600 is newer, more efficient, and still great value. It runs on the AM4 platform which means cheap motherboards are everywhere.

Avoid Intel's older i5 9th gen stuff unless the price is incredible. AM4 motherboards are just cheaper and easier to find right now.

GPU: The Heart of the Build

This is where you spend the most, and this is where most people make mistakes. Here's what I'd actually buy in 2026:

Motherboard: Don't Overspend Here

If you went with a Ryzen 5 3600 or 5600, you need an AM4 board. Something like the MSI B450M PRO-VDH MAX runs around $70–$85 new, or less used. It's basic, it works, it's fine.

You don't need RGB on the motherboard. You don't need Wi-Fi 6E on the motherboard. You need it to post and run stable. That's it.

RAM: 16GB, No Exceptions

The Phanteks Eclipse P300A Mesh is around $55 and has excellent airflow. If that's too much, the Cougar MX330-G Air goes for around $35–$40 and does the job fine.

If you want to push closer to $550–$600, swap the Ryzen 5 3600 for the Ryzen 5 5600 and add an extra 500GB drive for game storage. That's a genuinely excellent build for the money.

Heads up on used GPUs: When buying a used graphics card, always ask if it was used for crypto mining. Mining cards have been run at 100% load for months at a time. That's not automatically a death sentence β€” many mining cards are fine β€” but it's worth knowing. Ask for a video of it running a benchmark if you're buying remotely. GPU-Z is free and shows the card's real identity in about 30 seconds.

Building It: The Actual Steps

Step 1: Install the CPU onto the Motherboard (Before It Goes in the Case)

Performance Settings That Actually Matter

Once you're in Windows, open AMD Radeon Software and turn on Radeon Boost and Radeon Anti-Lag. These are free performance gains that AMD built in. Anti-Lag alone made a noticeable difference for me in fast-paced shooters.

In Windows, go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics and set your game to "High Performance" mode. Also turn off Xbox Game Bar (Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar) β€” it sits in the background eating resources for no reason if you're not streaming.

Inside your games, the single biggest fps gain on a budget build is dropping your resolution scale or shadow quality. Shadows are GPU-expensive and visually you won't notice much difference between "High" and "Medium" shadows. Textures can stay high β€” that's mostly VRAM, not raw GPU power.
