How to Link Your Ghana Card to Your Bank and MoMo Accounts (2026 Guide)

Here's the thing: the Bank of Ghana didn't just suggest you link your Ghana Card to your financial accounts. It made it a requirement. The Bank of Ghana directed that starting 1st July 2022, the Ghana Card shall be the only identification card to be used to undertake transactions at all licensed and regulated financial institutions. That includes your bank and your mobile money wallet.

If you've been putting it off, this is your sign to stop. The process isn't hard — it's mostly just knowing where to go and what to click. This guide covers your bank account, MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash, and AirtelTigo Money, all in one place.

Why This Matters: Banks have been authorized to restrict users from making any debit transactions if the user's info has not been updated with Ghana Card information. Don't wait until you're standing at a counter and can't transact.

Before You Start: What You Need

One document. That's it. Your Ghana Card — the biometric national ID issued by the National Identification Authority (NIA). No voter ID, no driver's licence, no passport. Ghana Card only.

For bank linking, also have your account number handy. For MoMo, your registered phone number and MoMo PIN are what you'll need. If your Ghana Card shows errors during the process, the NIA office can help you sort it — visit the NIA office at Ridge in Accra or any regional office to update your records.

Linking Your Ghana Card to Your Bank Account

Most banks now have online portals for this. You don't need to queue at a branch unless you absolutely have to. The update process is straightforward: visit your bank's Ghana Card update page, enter your bank account number, upload front and back photos of your Ghana Card (some banks require a selfie), and wait for confirmation via email or message.

GCB Bank

GCB has created an online portal where customers can link their Ghana Card number to their bank account. Here's the step-by-step:

  • Visit the official GCB Bank Ghana Card linkage portal at epay.gcbltd.com
  • Click on 'Link My Card', enter your GCB account number, and click 'Continue'
  • Choose either email or phone number for a One-Time Password (OTP) to be sent to you, then enter the OTP to be verified as the account owner
  • Enter the Personal ID Number on your Ghana Card, click 'Start Camera' to begin photo verification, and using your front camera, take a passport photo and upload it
  • Provide the last two (2) amounts transacted on the account

Zenith Bank

  • Visit apps2.zenithbank.com.gh/ghanacard/ and provide your account number, date of birth, and phone number, then click the submit button
  • Enter your Ghana Card details to link the card and account number

Other Major Banks

Here's a quick reference for other banks that have online portals. Always confirm the link is current on your bank's official website before entering any details.

  • Access Bank: apps.ghana.accessbankplc.com/accountopening/GhanaCard/
  • Ecobank Ghana: myghanacardupdate.ecobank.com/portal/
  • Fidelity Bank: dpfbgl101.myfidelitybank.net:4017/cus-update/
  • Cal Bank: calweb.caleservice.net/customerupdate/
  • GT Bank: ghanacard.gtbghana.com/
  • Stanbic Bank: e.stanbic.com.gh:8002/self.serviceRequest/welcome
  • Standard Chartered: Use the SC Mobile app (available on App Store and Google Play)
  • Consolidated Bank Ghana: cu.apps.cbg.com.gh/home/ghanacardupdate

For other banks that have not yet provided an online portal for linking, visit your bank with your Ghana Card, your account, and personal details for the update. No shame in going in-person — just bring everything listed above.

Linking Your Ghana Card to MTN MoMo

MTN MoMo is still the dominant network. MTN MoMo has the widest bank compatibility in Ghana. And your Ghana Card is central to the whole setup.

If you're registering MoMo for the first time: go to an MTN service centre or an accredited MoMo agent with your Ghana Card and your phone switched on. The agent scans your Ghana Card and takes a biometric selfie to confirm it's really you. The system then activates your MoMo wallet and asks you to set a 4-digit PIN.

Already have a MoMo account but haven't linked your Ghana Card yet? You can do it via USSD.

Via USSD (Any Phone)

  • Dial *170# from your MTN line
  • Choose Option 6 – My Wallet, then select Option 1 – MoMo Registration
  • Look for the Ghana Card linkage or KYC update option and enter your Ghana Card number
  • Follow the prompts and wait for an SMS confirmation

Linking Your Bank Account to MTN MoMo

This is a slightly different step — you're connecting your MoMo wallet to a bank account so you can move money between them. Here's how via USSD:

  • Dial *170#, select 6. Financial Services, choose 3. Bank Services, select 1. Link Bank Account
  • Pick your bank from the list, enter your 10-digit bank account number, then enter your bank account name exactly as it appears on your statement
  • Enter your MoMo PIN and wait for SMS confirmation — this arrives in 10 to 60 seconds for most banks

Prefer using an app? Open the MyMTN app, tap the MoMo tab at the bottom, tap Bank Services, select Link Bank Account, choose your bank, enter your account number and account name, then confirm with your MoMo PIN.

If your bank requires additional verification, MTN will send you an OTP via SMS to your registered bank mobile number. Enter that OTP in the next USSD prompt.

Linking Your Ghana Card to Telecel Cash

Telecel (formerly Vodafone) is Ghana's second network for mobile money. The Ghana Card linkage process here runs through *110#.

Why does it matter? The National Identification Authority and the Bank of Ghana mandated Ghana Card linkage to all mobile money wallets by September 2022. Telecel Cash wallets not linked to a Ghana Card are restricted to GHS 300 daily transactions and GHS 1,000 monthly transactions (as of April 2026). Verified accounts enjoy GHS 10,000 daily limits and GHS 50,000 monthly limits.

That's a big difference. Here's how to link:

  • Dial *110# from your Telecel number, select option 6 (Settings), select Ghana Card Linkage, enter your Ghana Card number, and wait for SMS confirmation — usually within 2 hours

If the automated system fails, visit any Telecel shop with your physical Ghana Card. The process takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Linking Telecel Cash to a Bank Account

Telecel Cash links to fewer banks but supports Ecobank, Fidelity, and GCB through *110# or the Telecel app. Here's how via USSD:

  • Dial *110# from your Telecel line and select 5. Bank Services, then choose 1. Link My Bank Account
  • Pick your bank, enter your account number, enter the account holder name, confirm with your Telecel Cash PIN, and wait for the SMS — approval takes 30 seconds to 5 minutes

Via the Telecel app: open the Telecel app, tap the Cash section, and select Bank Linking. The inputs are the same as USSD — just a cleaner interface.

AirtelTigo Money (AT Money)

AirtelTigo Money bank linking is limited to select tier-1 banks and often requires branch verification. If you're on AT, the safest bet is to walk into any AT service centre with your Ghana Card and ask the agent to assist with the Ghana Card linkage and bank account connection. The USSD process on AT Money follows a similar pattern to the others — dial the main menu shortcode and look for Financial Services or Bank Services — but the exact menu options can shift, so confirm with the agent when you're there.

Things That Can Go Wrong (and How to Fix Them)

A few common issues people run into:

  • "Ghana Card Not Found in System" — This usually means your NIA records haven't synced yet. Visit the NIA office or your telco's service centre with the physical card.
  • OTP not arriving — Make sure the phone number registered to your bank account is active and receiving calls/SMS. If the number is old, visit the branch first to update it.
  • Name mismatch — Your bank account name must match your Ghana Card name exactly. If there's a discrepancy, the bank needs to fix it in-branch before the link can work.
  • MoMo account locked — MTN will verify your identity using your registered phone number, your Ghana Card details, and recent MoMo transaction history. Visit a service centre with your Ghana Card to resolve this.
Quick Tip: After linking, make a small test transfer of GHS 1 to GHS 5 to a contact to confirm everything works. Better to catch a problem now than when you actually need to send money.

Keep Your Account Details Safe

Once everything's linked, a few habits worth keeping:

  • Never share your MoMo PIN with anyone.
  • Always use your registered Ghana Card details for all official processes.
  • Update your MoMo details whenever you change your SIM or ID.
  • For identity-related MoMo updates like correcting your Ghana Card number or name, you must visit an official MTN office — the app won't let you change that remotely.

If you ever lose your phone or SIM, call 100 to freeze your MoMo wallet. You'll need your Ghana Card to retrieve your number later.

That's genuinely all there is to it. The Ghana Card linking process was built to be done without a branch visit for most people. Use the online portals, confirm with an OTP, and you're done. The longer you wait, the more likely you are to get caught unable to transact at the worst possible moment.

Always verify steps directly with your bank or telco, as menus and portals do change. For the official Bank of Ghana position on financial institution requirements, visit bog.gov.gh. For Ghana Card issues, the NIA's official site is nia.gov.gh.
