Amazon Echo Plus - Skip This
Amazon discontinued the built-in hub feature. Regular Echo devices can control some smart home stuff, but they cannot replace a real hub.

Once you have your hub, lights are the best first purchase. You will see immediate results, and they work with basically every smart home platform.

Philips Hue White and Color - $50 per bulb
Expensive but worth it. The colors actually look good, not like a cheap disco ball. I have had the same Hue bulbs for three years with zero failures.
You need the Philips Hue Bridge ($60) to connect them to your main hub. Yes, that is another device to plug in. Yes, it is annoying. But it makes everything more reliable.
Sengled Smart Bulbs - $15 per bulb
Budget option that actually works. No fancy colors, just warm white to cool white. I use these in closets and bathrooms where I do not need the full Hue experience.
Pro tip I learned the hard way: Start with just 3-4 bulbs in your most-used rooms. Get those working perfectly before you go crazy buying more.
Smart Switches Beat Smart Bulbs for Most People
Here is something I wish I knew earlier: Smart switches are often better than smart bulbs.
Think about it. If you put a smart bulb in a regular switch, turning off the wall switch kills the bulb. Your family will do this constantly and break your automations.
Smart switches solve this problem. Any regular LED bulb becomes "smart" because you control it at the switch level.
Kasa Smart Switch - $15
Basic on/off control. Easy to install if you have a neutral wire in your switch box. Works with SmartThings, Alexa, and Google.
I installed eight of these throughout my house. They have worked perfectly for 18 months straight.
Lutron Caseta Dimmer Switch - $45
More expensive but works without a neutral wire. This saved me in my 1970s house where half the switches do not have neutral wires.
The Lutron app is also much better than most smart switch apps I have tried.

Climate Control Gives You Real Savings
Smart thermostats are not just convenient. They actually save money on energy bills.
I installed an Ecobee SmartThermostat ($249) in January 2024. My electric bill dropped by an average of $31 per month compared to the same months in 2023.
Why Ecobee Over Nest?
I tested both. Ecobee has better room sensors and works with more smart home platforms. Nest looks nicer but locks you into the Google ecosystem.
The Ecobee room sensors ($79 for a 2-pack) are brilliant. They detect which rooms you are actually using and adjust temperature accordingly. My bedroom stays cool at night while the living room warms up in the morning automatically.
Installation Reality Check
Most thermostats require a C-wire for power. If your house does not have one, you will need to run new wire or use a power extender kit.

Ring Video Doorbell - $180
I know Ring gets privacy criticism, but the doorbell integration with other smart home devices is excellent. When someone rings the doorbell, my smart lights flash and my TV shows the camera feed automatically.
What About DIY Security Systems?
I tried SimpliSafe and ADT. Both work fine as standalone systems, but integrating them with other smart home devices is limited.
If you want everything connected, build your security system using the same hub as everything else. Z-Wave door sensors ($35 each) and motion detectors ($45 each) that connect to SmartThings work better for whole-home automation.
Voice Assistants Come Last
Everyone wants to start with Alexa or Google Home. I think that is backwards.
Voice assistants are great for controlling smart home devices. But they are terrible at making incompatible devices work together. That is your hub's job.
Once you have your hub, lights, switches, and thermostat set up, then add voice control on top.
Amazon Echo Dot - $50
I have three of these around the house. They integrate well with SmartThings and respond quickly to commands.
"Alexa, bedtime" turns off all lights, locks the front door, sets the thermostat to 68 degrees, and arms the security system. That routine took five minutes to set up in the SmartThings app.
Google Nest Mini - $50
Works equally well if you prefer Google Assistant. The choice mostly comes down to which ecosystem you already use for music and shopping.

The Setup Process That Actually Works

Week 3: Install the thermostat. This is the trickiest part. Take pictures of your existing wiring before disconnecting anything.
Week 4: Add the voice assistant. Set up basic routines like "goodnight" and "good morning" that control your existing devices.
I cannot stress this enough: Go slow. I know you want to automate everything immediately. But every device you add increases complexity. Master each layer before adding the next one.
The biggest mistake people make is buying everything at once, then spending months troubleshooting why device #47 will not connect properly.
Troubleshooting the Most Common Problems
After helping 12 friends set up their smart homes, I see the same issues repeatedly:
"My device connected but does not respond to commands": Usually a WiFi range problem. Smart home devices need strong, consistent WiFi. I added a mesh router system ($299 for Eero Pro 6) and most connection issues disappeared.
