Ethiopia's national payment switch, EthSwitch, is in talks with Huawei to deepen cooperation across artificial intelligence, payment infrastructure, and cross-border payment connectivity with China — a move that could significantly reshape how Ethiopia's fast-expanding digital finance market integrates with global systems.
The discussions took place in Addis Ababa during a visit by Fernando Liu, President of Huawei Digital Finance's Central Bank & Non-Traditional Finance Business Unit. He met directly with EthSwitch Chief Executive Officer Yilebes Addis to map out potential areas of expanded partnership.
What Was on the Table
According to EthSwitch, the agenda covered mobile banking innovation, resilient payment infrastructure, and AI applications designed to improve both efficiency and security across Ethiopia's payments ecosystem. Talks also touched on technical capacity building — skills development and knowledge transfer aimed at growing domestic fintech expertise alongside infrastructure investment.
The most geopolitically significant item, though, was cross-border payment cooperation with China's payment and clearing ecosystem. Closer connectivity between EthSwitch and Chinese payment networks could eventually streamline transaction flows tied to trade, tourism, and commercial activity between the two countries. China is Ethiopia's largest bilateral trading partner, making smoother payment rails a practical priority, not just a strategic talking point.
Ethiopia's Digital Payments Boom
Those numbers are not just impressive on paper — they reflect a payments market growing faster than almost anywhere else on the continent. EthSwitch sits at the center of it all, connecting banks and payment service providers through ATM, point-of-sale, QR code, instant payment, and gateway services.
The institution was built specifically to deliver interoperable payment infrastructure, and as Ethiopia continues liberalizing its financial sector, its role has only grown more central to digital financial inclusion across the country. The Huawei discussions fit that trajectory — EthSwitch is clearly looking for technology partners capable of operating at the scale Ethiopia now demands.
Huawei's Growing Footprint in Digital Finance
Huawei has been steadily positioning itself as a go-to technology partner for financial institutions worldwide, offering cloud computing, cybersecurity, AI, and digital banking solutions. The company currently serves financial-sector clients in more than 60 countries and claims thousands of customers globally in the sector.
Its Digital Finance division specifically targets central banks, commercial banks, and national payment infrastructure operators — making EthSwitch a natural fit for its expanding Africa portfolio. The Addis Ababa meeting signals that Ethiopia's payments infrastructure is now firmly on Huawei's radar as a strategic market.
What Comes Next
No formal agreement has been announced yet. The discussions remain exploratory, but the scope — spanning AI applications, infrastructure resilience, cross-border connectivity, and capacity building — suggests both sides are considering something broader than a routine vendor relationship.
For Ethiopia, the stakes are high. A partnership of this kind could accelerate the technological maturity of its payments ecosystem at a moment when digital financial services are expanding rapidly and the demand for secure, efficient infrastructure has never been greater.
