Ghana's digital services economy generates approximately $1 billion annually, with platform-based work emerging as a major driver of income generation and entrepreneurship across the country, according to a new study commissioned by Bolt and conducted by Ipsos.
The Gig Economy Report analyzed participation across multiple sectors including ride-hailing, delivery, e-commerce, freelancing, remote work, and micro-tasks. The research provides fresh insights into how Ghanaians are adapting to an increasingly digital and entrepreneurial economic landscape.
Ride-Hailing Dominates Platform Economy
The study reveals that ride-hailing has become one of the most significant segments within Africa's gig economy, ranking second only to e-commerce among survey participants. Financial independence, flexible earning opportunities, and the ability to generate additional income emerged as primary motivators for platform participation.
The research timing coincides with Ghana's evolving economic conditions, including changing income patterns, growing urbanization, and increasing digital adoption. Platform-based activity is becoming an essential pathway for individuals seeking income opportunities while maintaining flexibility and independence.
Digital Infrastructure Enables Growth
Ghana's entrepreneurial culture represents one of its strongest economic assets, according to the findings. Digital platforms are providing accessible pathways for individuals to generate income, participate in the digital economy, and build entrepreneurial ventures.
The study highlights technology's enabling role in this transformation. Near-universal mobile connectivity, increasing smartphone penetration, and widespread mobile money adoption have accelerated access to digital services, making platform-based activity more accessible than previously possible.
"As Ghana's digital economy continues to evolve, platform-based activity is becoming an increasingly important part of how people generate income and participate in economic life," said Teddy-Appah Dankyi, Senior General Manager, Bolt West Africa.
Economic Participation and Innovation
Dankyi emphasized that the findings reinforce the role digital platforms play in supporting entrepreneurship, financial independence, and greater economic participation. The research provides valuable insights into how technology creates opportunities for individuals across Ghana.
The report indicates broader opportunities for continued growth within Ghana's digital economy. As digital services adoption increases, platform-based activity is expected to play an even greater role in supporting entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic inclusion across the country.
Future of Digital Work in Ghana
The findings contribute to growing conversations around the future of income generation, entrepreneurship, and digital participation in Ghana. The study provides evidence-based insights into how technology-enabled platforms are shaping the country's evolving economic landscape.
This research adds to broader discussions about income diversification strategies and the role of technology in economic development across Africa. The platform economy's growth reflects changing work patterns and technological adoption throughout the continent.
The study's release comes as Ghana continues navigating economic challenges while positioning itself as a leader in digital innovation and entrepreneurship within West Africa's technology sector.
