Ghana has set an ambitious target to achieve 70 percent nationwide 5G population coverage by Independence Day on March 6, 2027, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations announced this week.
Samuel Nartey George revealed the government initiative during the 15th anniversary launch of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications in Accra. The Minister positioned the 5G expansion as a cornerstone of Ghana's accelerated digital transformation agenda.
"We are determined to ensure that by Independence Day in 2027, at least 70 percent of Ghana's population will have access to 5G services," Mr. George stated.
Digital Infrastructure as Economic Driver
The Minister emphasized that the 5G rollout will expand access to high-speed internet services across Ghana. The infrastructure deployment aims to improve connectivity while supporting innovation across multiple sectors including businesses, education, healthcare and financial technology services.
George highlighted the government's view of digital connectivity as essential for economic growth and national development. He stressed that digital technology has evolved beyond luxury status to become fundamental infrastructure.
"Digital technology is no longer a luxury. It is the backbone of modern economies and we must position Ghana to fully benefit from the opportunities of the digital age," he said.
Public-Private Collaboration Framework
The government plans to work closely with industry players and regulators to ensure rapid deployment of necessary infrastructure. George stressed the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors to bridge the digital divide.
The Minister specifically mentioned ensuring that underserved communities are not excluded from Ghana's technological advancement. This approach aligns with broader efforts to promote digital inclusion across the country's diverse regions.
Industry Support and Partnership
Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, Sylvia Ankomah, praised the Ministry's strategic approach to 5G deployment. She described the government's initiative as a swift move to position Ghana advantageously in the 5G technology landscape.
"We commend the Ministry for the bold steps being taken to fast-track Ghana's digital transformation through 5G deployment," she said.
Ankomah noted that 5G technology adoption would unlock new opportunities for innovation, investment and economic inclusion across multiple economic sectors. The telecommunications industry has committed to supporting government efforts aimed at improving digital access and enhancing connectivity quality for Ghanaians.
