Ghana's TraffiTech-GH Speed Cameras Go Live November 1

Ghana's roads just got a digital watchdog. The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) launched its TraffiTech-GH digital traffic enforcement system on Sunday, November 1, 2026 — a camera-driven speeding detection platform that will send electronic violation notices directly to the phones of registered vehicle owners.

ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, the MTTD's Director of Education, Research and Training, confirmed the department was fully prepared going into launch day.

"We are set, everything is ready, and we are taking off," ACP Obeng said.

Cameras will be mounted both on police vehicles and on tripods at crash-prone locations across the country. When a vehicle is caught exceeding the prescribed speed limit, the MTTD processes the footage and fires off an electronic notice to the phone number linked to that vehicle's registration.

How the Notices Work

The digital notices will carry the sender ID GPS MTTD and include a link giving vehicle owners direct access to video evidence of the alleged offence — complete with the date, time, and precise location of the incident. It is a sharp departure from the roadside-stop-and-impound approach that drivers have long dreaded.

Recipients will have 14 days to either pay the prescribed fine or challenge the offence in court. ACP Obeng emphasised that the system lets officers gather solid evidence without stopping vehicles, impounding them, or hauling motorists to police stations and motor courts.

Speed Limits Under Enforcement

TraffiTech-GH's initial rollout targets three specific thresholds: 50km/h in towns, 90km/h on highways, and 100km/h on motorways. Drivers caught exceeding any of these limits at the identified hotspots will be the system's first targets.

ACP Obeng was clear that TraffiTech-GH was built specifically to address speeding and will not replace manual enforcement of other road traffic offences. Both systems will run in parallel, though the department intends to scale back the use of handheld radar guns at roadside stops for speeding cases specifically. This kind of shift in tech-driven law enforcement reflects a broader move toward data-backed policing across Africa.

Transport Operators Push Back

The launch has not been without friction. Commercial transport operators threatened to suspend services nationwide from November 1 in protest against the system's rollout. It is a significant threat in a country where road transport is the backbone of daily commutes and goods movement.

ACP Obeng acknowledged the tensions but said the MTTD had held stakeholder engagements and run public education campaigns ahead of the launch. He added that some operators had actually warmed to the digital approach — reasoning that it could spare their drivers the disruption of physical arrests, station visits, and court appearances.

Key Stat: Vehicle owners have just 14 days from receipt of an electronic notice to pay the prescribed fine or contest the charge in court under TraffiTech-GH.

Whether the opposition from transport groups translates into actual service suspensions remains to be seen. What is clear is that Ghana's approach to road safety enforcement has taken a decisive technological turn — one that puts the burden of proof on video evidence rather than an officer's word at a roadside checkpoint.

The MTTD says speeding enforcement will remain TraffiTech-GH's sole focus for now, with no indication yet of when — or whether — the system might expand to cover other traffic offences.
