A massive bond offering tied to Google-backed data centres just made one thing painfully clear: Africa is being left behind in the artificial intelligence infrastructure race, and the culprit is not what you might expect.

The $5.7 billion bond deal, led by Morgan Stanley and linked to Alphabet's Google data centres, drew an astounding $19 billion in investor orders when it priced on Thursday, April 16. What particularly notable was not just the size β€” this is the largest dollar-denominated junk bond ever issued for a data centre project β€” but where the money is going.

The funds will finance two data centres in Sullivan County, Indiana, to be leased to cloud computing startup Fluidstack Ltd. Meanwhile, Africa continues to watch from the sidelines.

Key Stat: Africa is home to nearly one in five people on earth, yet accounts for just 0.6% of global data centre capacity.

Power, Not Talent, Determines AI Winners

The sheer scale of private capital flowing toward AI infrastructure reveals an uncomfortable truth that development economists have been highlighting for years. It is not broadband connectivity or software talent that determines where the AI economy takes root β€” it is electricity.

This reality becomes stark when you examine the numbers. The 2026 Data Centres in Africa Economic Report, published by the Africa Data Centres Association (ADCA), identifies power as the primary constraint on data centre growth across the continent.

In Nigeria, grid instability has forced data centre operators to function as de facto independent power plants. The continent's most populous economy has just 17 data centres collectively requiring around 137 megawatts of power capacity, and frequent outages remain a defining obstacle.

The Energy Economics Reality Check

McKinsey projects that data centre capacity in Africa's five largest markets will grow from around 400 megawatts today to between 1.5 and 2.2 gigawatts by 2030. Kenya, Nigeria, Morocco, and Egypt are identified as key emerging hubs alongside South Africa, the continent's leading market.

But these projections mean little without addressing the fundamental power constraint. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that electricity demand from data centres, AI and crypto-assets could more than double by 2030.

Investors backing billion-dollar AI infrastructure projects are essentially making long-duration bets on jurisdictions that can guarantee one critical input above all others: reliable, high-volume power. That calculus currently disadvantages most of sub-Saharan Africa.

Green Potential Meets Grid Reality

The irony is not lost on me. Africa's renewable energy potential is widely recognised, with Ethiopia and Kenya already generating almost all their electricity from renewable sources. Kenya draws from geothermal, solar, wind, and hydroelectric power.

Yet analysts consistently draw a distinction between endowment and delivery. Having renewable resources does not automatically translate to the grid stability and capacity that AI infrastructure demands.

The Google-backed bond deal serves as a wake-up call. While billions flow toward AI infrastructure in power-secure locations like Indiana, Africa's vast potential remains constrained by fundamental infrastructure gaps. Until the continent can solve its power delivery challenge, it risks being spectators in the AI economy rather than participants.
