The tech world has found an unlikely savior in Iraq's oil infrastructure. Major American hyperscalers including Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft are now channeling critical data out of the Gulf through fiber-optic cables running alongside Iraqi crude oil pipelines.
This shift became urgent after Iranian drone strikes hit Amazon's data centers in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain on March 1, creating widespread disruption across the region. What particularly notable was how quickly the effects rippled beyond just tech services.
Banking Crisis Reveals Gulf Vulnerability
The attacks exposed just how dependent the Gulf has become on cloud infrastructure. Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank's mobile app stopped working entirely. Payment platforms crashed. Delivery services went dark.

Iraqi Networks Fill the Gap
Enter IQ Networks, a company based in Iraq's Kurdistan region that has been quietly building alternative routes since 2010. Martin Frank, strategic adviser at IQ Networks, told me that "most if not all the hyperscalers" have now bought capacity on their Iraqi route.
The timing could not be better. Traditional Gulf data normally travels to Europe through cables under the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz - exactly the routes now at risk from regional conflicts. IQ Networks' overland path serves as the backup the tech giants desperately need.
The Bigger Picture for Regional Tech
Paul Brodsky, senior research manager at TeleGeography, which tracks global telecommunications infrastructure, confirmed that demand for diverse fiber routes out of the Gulf is "ultimately driven by hyperscalers such as Google."
IQ Networks is not stopping at Iraq. Frank revealed they are extending the network through gas-pipeline corridors across Turkey to the European border, with the first link expected early next year. Once complete, this will create direct connections to Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London, and Marseille.
The route is already carrying live traffic, Frank confirmed. This represents a significant shift in how cloud computing infrastructure adapts to geopolitical realities.
Regional Implications
The Iraqi route highlights broader concerns about cybersecurity and infrastructure resilience across the Middle East. When hyperscalers serving customers in more than 190 countries face regional disruptions, the effects are felt globally.
For African businesses increasingly reliant on Gulf-based cloud services, this development offers both reassurance and a reminder of infrastructure vulnerabilities. The Iraqi backup route may prevent future continent-wide service disruptions when regional conflicts flare.
What strikes me most is how an oil-rich nation recovering from decades of conflict has become essential to global digital infrastructure. Sometimes the most critical tech infrastructure stories happen far from Silicon Valley.
