Lagos Advances in Global Startup Rankings

Lagos has climbed to 70th position globally in the latest Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2026 by StartupBlink, posting 23.0% growth and maintaining its status as the highest-ranked city on the African continent. The commercial hub houses 987 startups, representing nearly 67% of all startups in Nigeria.

Nigeria advanced four places to reach 62nd position globally, demonstrating 31.8% growth. However, the country remains in third position across Africa, trailing behind South Africa at 52nd globally and Kenya at 61st position.

Key Stat: Lagos total score is almost ten times higher than Abuja's, highlighting the dominance of Nigeria's commercial capital in the startup ecosystem.

Secondary Cities Show Strong Growth

Beyond Lagos, several Nigerian cities have secured positions in the Global 1000 rankings. Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, and Enugu all feature among Nigeria's top performing cities, with Port Harcourt recording the fastest growth rate at 82.0% among Nigerian cities.

Enugu emerged as a notable success story, rising nearly 40% over the past year to earn its place on the Global 1000 list. The southeastern city has ambitious economic development plans tied to regional growth initiatives.

"Enugu is implementing a deliberate, capital-ready innovation ecosystem under our digital economy transformation strategy," said Ainze Chilo-Offiah, Special Adviser to the Governor on digital economy. "Our innovation programs, anchored by initiatives like the Enugu Campus Hackathon, discover and structure high-quality founders, while our tech and innovation hub scales them into globally competitive ventures."

The regional development commission backing Enugu has set an ambitious target to grow the regional economy to $200 billion by 2035. Ibadan was the only Nigerian city to decline in position during the reporting period.

Africa Shows Strong Regional Growth

The 2026 report revealed that three of the world's fastest-growing startup regions are located in Africa: Central, Western, and Southern Africa all rank among the top global growth regions. This performance indicates the continent's expanding role in the global technology ecosystem.

South Africa maintained its continental leadership position, moving from 53rd globally in 2023 to 52nd in 2026 with 31.3% growth. Cape Town surged 24 places to reach 114th position globally, reclaiming its status as South Africa's top-ranked city.

Continental Growth Patterns

Angola and Algeria recorded the fastest growth rates across the continent, while Cape Verde and Tunisia also achieved growth above 30%. Kenya, despite dropping three places from its previous ranking, maintained second position in Africa at 61st globally.

The strengthening of secondary hubs beyond primary commercial centers could help broaden ecosystem geographic reach across African countries. Nigeria's performance demonstrates the potential for developing multiple startup centers beyond single dominant cities.

The Global Startup Ecosystem Index tracks startup activity, funding levels, and ecosystem development across cities worldwide, providing insights into regional technology sector growth and investment patterns.
