MTN Ghana to Build 80 Sites in the North in $1.1bn Push

MTN Ghana is pushing one of its most ambitious infrastructure builds in years, with 80 new network sites planned across the five regions of the north in 2026 β€” part of a sweeping $1.1 billion investment to expand coverage nationwide.

Emmanuel Kwei Afutu, MTN Ghana's Senior Manager in charge of Base Station Subsystems, announced the rollout as the company marks its 30th year of operations in Ghana. He said $380 million has been earmarked specifically for network expansion in 2026 alone.

How the 80 Sites Break Down

The northern deployment is not spread evenly. The Northern Region gets the biggest share with 38 new sites, followed by 17 in the Savannah Region, 14 in Upper East, and 11 in North East. The Upper West Region adds one more site to round out the total of 80.

Nationally, MTN is targeting 500 new sites in 2026, which Afutu described as one of the company's largest single-year infrastructure deployments in recent memory.

Key Stat: MTN Ghana's mobile money transaction value grew 44.4% year-on-year in the first half of 2026, with transaction volumes up 23.3% over the same period.

Connectivity With a Purpose

Afutu framed the expansion beyond signal bars and download speeds. He said the new sites are intended to deliver tangible economic and social impact β€” particularly in communities that have historically been underserved or affected by security pressures in the north.

"The sites are expected to help farmers reach markets, students access online learning, businesses process digital payments, and families stay connected. In areas that have faced security challenges, improved connectivity will also support communication and safety for communities and security services."

It is a pointed acknowledgment that northern Ghana's digital gap is not just about infrastructure β€” it is about what that infrastructure unlocks. AI-driven agri-tech tools and digital payments, for instance, remain largely out of reach for rural communities without reliable network access.

Strong Financials Backing the Build

The investment is being driven by what Afutu described as strong financial momentum. MTN Ghana's revenue climbed 32.3% to 15 billion cedis in the first six months of 2026. Profit after tax jumped 46.8% to 5.1 billion cedis, and the company paid 5.6 billion cedis in direct and indirect taxes over that same period.

Mobile money services are a major part of that story. Transaction value grew 44.4% year-on-year in H1 2026, while volumes rose 23.3% β€” numbers that signal deepening adoption well beyond the urban centers.

Investing in People, Not Just Towers

Afutu said MTN Ghana's ambitions extend to human capital through the MTN Ghana Foundation. The company's MTN Skills Academy aims to train more than 100,000 young Ghanaians in digital and financial skills, while its Bright Scholarship has already supported over 1,200 students. Water, sanitation, and hygiene projects in schools across the north are also part of the foundation's portfolio.

Still, Afutu did not shy away from acknowledging what remains unfinished. Affordability and digital literacy, he said, continue to hold back wider adoption β€” and addressing them will require sustained collaboration between MTN, government, regulators, and communities.

"As Ghana grows, we will grow with Ghana; our ambition has moved from simply connecting people to connecting people to opportunities."

With 30 years in the market and a $1.1 billion commitment on the table, MTN Ghana is clearly betting that the next chapter of growth runs through the north.
