Nigeria has made a bold move to accelerate its digital transformation by committing $9 million (₦12 billion) to a comprehensive research initiative that aims to build homegrown expertise in critical technology areas. The National Digital Economy Research Clusters Initiative was officially launched on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, in Abuja through a strategic partnership between the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and the Federal Ministry of Education. Six Strategic Research Areas Identified
The initiative, funded under Project BRIDGE, brings together universities and research institutions across six thematic areas that I believe represent the most critical challenges facing African nations today. These include connectivity and meaningful access, digital public infrastructure, digital skills and human capital, jobs and the digital economy, trust and safety, and artificial intelligence.

Tijani highlighted previous investments in artificial intelligence research that have already generated more than 27 peer-reviewed publications and improved Nigeria's global Artificial Intelligence readiness ranking.
