Paystack announced the launch of its first complete Dashboard rebuild in a decade on Tuesday, marking a significant upgrade to the platform that has served African merchants since 2016. The Stripe-owned fintech company introduced a redesigned interface featuring simplified navigation, mobile parity, and an AI-powered Command Centre.
The timing aligns with growing AI adoption across Africa, where a PwC report indicates 82% of organisations are currently running AI pilots. The African AI market is projected to reach $16.5 billion by 2030, driving companies to integrate artificial intelligence into their business workflows.
AI-Native Command Centre Takes Center Stage
The centerpiece of the rebuild is an AI-native Command Centre, internally called Canvas, which provides merchants with a conversational interface built directly into the Dashboard. The system uses merchant transaction and operational data to answer business questions through text, tables, or charts.
Rather than requiring merchants to navigate multiple pages to gather information, the Command Centre allows natural language queries about business activity. The feature addresses the increasing demand for AI-powered business tools across African markets.
Focus on Reliability and Data Security
Given the sensitive nature of financial information, Paystack emphasized reliability and accuracy in the rebuild. The company stated that every Command Centre response is grounded in actual merchant data rather than generic model outputs, using what it describes as a deterministic harness designed to reduce hallucinations.
"We built a simple framework for how the system handles different kinds of requests," said Dara Assim-Ita, the senior product designer who led the rebuild. "Valid requests within the system's capability get fulfilled. Valid requests outside the system's capability are declined with suggested alternatives, so merchants know what else might help. Harmful requests are refused entirely."
The system incorporates automated evaluation systems that continuously test response quality against predefined baselines. Every request processed through the Command Centre undergoes evaluation against safety and compliance criteria before generating responses.
Technical Infrastructure and Navigation Improvements
The Command Centre operates on a combination of GPT models, structured data retrieval, and an internal orchestration layer called Project Canvas API. This infrastructure connects the AI interface to Paystack's existing operational systems.
Beyond AI features, the rebuild addresses fundamental usability concerns through simplified navigation structure and mobile parity. These improvements reflect the mobile-first approach necessary for African markets, where smartphone usage drives much of the digital commerce activity.
Strategic Context for African Fintech
Paystack launched in 2016 as a cheaper and faster alternative to Nigeria's existing online payment processors. Over the past decade, the company expanded across multiple African markets, layering commerce tools and financial workflows onto its core payment processing services.
The Dashboard serves as the primary interface where merchants monitor transactions, track revenue, manage customers, and perform payment operations. This latest rebuild represents the company's most significant platform update since its initial launch, positioning Paystack to compete in an increasingly AI-driven fintech landscape.
The upgrade comes as African businesses increasingly demand sophisticated tools to manage digital commerce operations, with AI-powered analytics becoming a key differentiator among payment processors serving the continent's growing digital economy.
