Nigeria's crypto sector witnessed another major consolidation move as SirMapy and Co. decentralised autonomous organisation (SMC DAO) acquired local startup Bread Africa in an undisclosed all-cash six-figure transaction.
The deal represents a pattern I have been tracking across Nigeria's digital asset space. We are seeing established players systematically absorbing smaller competitors to strengthen their market positions.
Serial Entrepreneur's Third Exit
What stands out is the relationship history here. Bread Africa CEO Iam Etefia previously sold two other ventures to the same buyer - Peniwallet and Peniremit both went to SMC DAO in 2023 for $250,000.
This marks Etefia's third successful exit to SMC DAO, suggesting either exceptional loyalty or a calculated strategy by the DAO to systematically acquire this entrepreneur's ventures.
Frictionless Crypto Conversion Platform
Founded in 2025, Bread Africa operated as a web-based application that simplified crypto-to-cash conversions for Nigerian users. The platform deliberately removed typical crypto barriers - no sign-ups, no wallet connections, and no Know Your Customer requirements.
"We integrated them [cNGN] without even having a relationship with them. We saw what cNGN could do and believed the naira could be spent globally, not just in Nigeria, so we built around that," Etefia told TechCabal.
Behind this simplicity lay sophisticated infrastructure. Bread Africa operated across multiple blockchains including Base and Solana, but settled transactions in compliant naira (cNGN) stablecoin on Base for faster, cheaper processing.
Early Ecosystem Support
The startup attracted significant early backing from key ecosystem players. Bread Africa received grants from cNGN, Base, and blockchain infrastructure provider Alchemy, demonstrating strong integration into emerging crypto rails tied to the Nigerian market.
This institutional support likely made Bread Africa an attractive acquisition target for SMC DAO, which has been seeking to own an exchange product within its ecosystem. The three-person team included Etefia, co-founder Maven Harry, and a community manager.
Growing Consolidation Wave
This deal continues a consolidation trend across Nigeria's crypto sector. In 2025, crypto startup Roqqu acquired Flitaa, an exchange platform operating in Nigeria and Kenya, for an undisclosed amount.
The acquisition transfers all of Bread Africa's operational and branding assets to SMC DAO. Etefia will remain as an advisor while stepping back from daily operations, but his team is moving on to new ventures.
Next Chapter: Loaf as Web3 Bank
Etefia and Maven Harry are now focusing on Loaf, a separate product they describe as a "Web3 bank." This represents a significant expansion beyond simple crypto swaps, allowing users to spend crypto for bills, airtime, and cross-border payments without traditional banking intermediaries.
The timing feels strategic. As Nigeria's crypto regulatory environment continues evolving, we are seeing entrepreneurs pivot toward more comprehensive financial services rather than single-purpose conversion tools.
For SMC DAO, acquiring Bread Africa provides immediate access to proven crypto-to-fiat infrastructure and an established user base processing significant transaction volumes.
