A Chadian IT engineer has built an ingenious solution to his country's severe doctor shortage: solar-powered medical kiosks that function as mini-clinics in remote areas. What started as a simple app idea has evolved into something far more sophisticated and practical.

Abakar Mahamat was studying for his Master's in Information Technology engineering at ISGA (Institut Supérieur des Génies et des Affaires) in Morocco back in 2021 when he stumbled upon Chad's healthcare crisis during his research. The numbers were stark and troubling.

Key Stat: Chad has only 0.8 physicians per 10,000 people, far below the WHO's global benchmark of 2.5 medical staff per 1,000 people.

Initially, Mahamat thought a telemedicine app would solve the access problem. But reality hit hard when he considered Chad's digital infrastructure limitations. With internet penetration at just 13.2%, a smartphone app would exclude the very people who needed help most.

"Remote areas in Chad have a very low rate of electrification and connectivity. The Internet is expensive for remote areas, so developing a mobile app for this context was not suitable," Mahamat explained.

Beyond Digital: Physical Health Diagnosis

The breakthrough came when Mahamat realized that effective medical consultation requires more than just video calls. Doctors need actual diagnostic data - blood pressure readings, heart sounds, lung function, body temperature, and blood oxygen levels.

"During the teleconsultation, what if the doctors need to know the temperature or the blood oxygenation levels in the patients? An app does not have tools to get that data," he reflected on those early planning stages.

In 2021, Mahamat partnered with Ahmed Kotoko to launch Telemedan, creating what I find to be a remarkably practical solution to a complex problem. Their solar-powered kiosks function as complete mini-clinics.

How Telemedan Works

The kiosk system is elegantly simple. Patients walk in, book appointments, and connect with doctors through video conferencing. But here is what sets it apart from typical telemedicine - the kiosks pack real diagnostic equipment.

Each unit includes medical devices for on-site diagnostics, including dermatoscopes for skin examination. This allows doctors to gather real-time diagnostic data during consultations, bridging the gap between remote care and physical examination.

Government Partnership Ensures Quality

What particularly notable about Telemedan's approach is how they handle doctor credentialing. Through a 2022 partnership, Chad's Ministry of Health provides the medical professionals who staff the virtual consultations.

The doctors undergo pre-screening and selection through the National Digital Health Program, a government initiative focused on implementing digital health tools across the country. "This ensures that the clinicians involved are qualified, aligned with national standards, and integrated into the public health system," Mahamat noted.

This government backing addresses a critical concern in telemedicine - ensuring that remote patients receive care from properly qualified medical professionals rather than unvetted practitioners.

The solar power component makes these kiosks particularly suited for health technology deployment in areas where traditional electricity infrastructure remains unreliable. It is exactly this kind of thoughtful engineering that makes the difference between a good idea and a genuinely useful solution.

For a continent where healthcare access remains a persistent challenge, Telemedan represents the kind of localized innovation that addresses real problems with practical technology. The question now is whether this model can scale beyond Chad to serve other underserved regions across Africa.
