Yoco Expands Beyond Payments with AI Acquisition

South African fintech company Yoco has acquired Dyner.ai, an artificial intelligence-native operating system designed to streamline operations for small and medium-sized enterprises. The acquisition signals a strategic shift for Yoco as it evolves beyond its core digital payments business into a comprehensive commerce platform.

Carl Wazen, Co-Founder and Chief Business Officer at Yoco, described the deal as a major strategic evolution during an interview with TechCabal on Thursday. The move aims to serve more than 200,000 merchants across South Africa with enhanced operational capabilities.

"This forms part of our ongoing plans of evolving into a broader commerce platform combining payments, software, financial services and AI-powered operational tools for more than 200 000 merchants across South Africa," Wazen said.

Targeting Restaurant Operations and SME Efficiency

Dyner.ai was founded by former actuaries Thalentha Ngobeni and Chris du Plessis to create an intelligent operating system specifically for restaurants. The platform helps business owners manage stock, invoices, supplier relationships, reporting, margins and daily workflows through AI automation.

The system features an embedded AI assistant that analyzes business data and responds to operational questions in real time. Instead of manual spreadsheet analysis, business owners can ask direct questions about stock inconsistencies, profit fluctuations, or underperforming products.

Key Stat: SMEs contribute an estimated 35% to 40% of South Africa's economy and support roughly 60% of employment.

Addressing Enterprise Technology Gap for Small Businesses

The acquisition addresses a significant technology gap facing South African small businesses, many of which operate with tight margins and limited administrative capacity. Wazen emphasized that the deal provides access to enterprise-grade technology previously reserved for large corporations.

Many SMEs continue to struggle with stock losses, fraud, poor cash-flow visibility, and inefficient operations. The AI integration aims to bridge these gaps by automating routine tasks, detecting inefficiencies and providing actionable insights for better decision-making.

"This is really about building the future for the independent business segment. The next big challenge is really about giving them capability, not just access to payments, but real capability that was otherwise reserved for enterprises and affluent consumers," Wazen explained.

Real-Time Business Intelligence for Merchants

The Dyner.ai platform integrates with existing point-of-sale systems, accounting software, and other business tools to provide personalized insights. This integration represents a departure from traditional software approaches that require manual data interpretation.

Wazen highlighted the practical applications for merchants, noting the system can automatically surface daily priorities such as unusual stock movements, unreconciled payments, or pricing issues. This automated prioritization helps business owners focus on critical operational decisions rather than administrative tasks.

Strategic Implications for South African Fintech

The deal represents broader trends in the South African technology ecosystem, where local startups are collaborating to build enterprise-grade solutions specifically for emerging market challenges. The focus on AI-powered business tools reflects growing recognition of artificial intelligence's potential to democratize sophisticated business capabilities.

For township entrepreneurs and smaller merchants, the value proposition centers on operational efficiency gains that can significantly impact profitability. The integration of AI capabilities into everyday business operations marks a significant step toward leveling the technological playing field between small businesses and larger enterprises.

The acquisition positions Yoco to compete more directly with comprehensive business management platforms while maintaining its focus on the South African market's specific needs and constraints.
