M-KOPA Transforms Digital Access Through Smartphone Financing

M-KOPA has unlocked more than GHS 1.2 billion (approximately $82 million) in credit for over 550,000 customers across Ghana since entering the market in 2021. The fintech company released these figures in its latest Impact Report published on May 20, 2026.

The company has evolved beyond smartphone sales to become a comprehensive digital services platform. Through partnerships and bundled offerings, M-KOPA now provides health insurance, digital finance solutions, and income generation opportunities for low-income earners.

Key Stat: 67% of insured customers accessed health insurance for the first time through M-KOPA's platform, while 43% of women chose M-KOPA smartphones specifically for bundled health coverage.

Platform Expansion Drives Explosive Growth

The transformation accelerated in January 2025 when M-KOPA launched its "More than a Phone" platform in Ghana. The initiative bundles smartphones with health insurance, affordable data plans, and device protection directly into customer installment payments.

Sales jumped fourfold following the platform launch as M-KOPA expanded operations across all 16 regions of Ghana. The company now operates through a network of more than 3,000 agents nationwide.

The Impact Report reveals that 44% of customers accessed formal products or services for the first time through M-KOPA. Additionally, 36% of users reported that their financed smartphone was the first mobile device they had ever owned.

Economic Impact Extends Beyond Device Access

More than half of M-KOPA customers now use their smartphones to generate income, with 54% reporting increased earnings after purchasing their devices. The economic benefits extend further, with 76% of users reporting improved overall quality of life.

M-KOPA's partnership with insurance provider Turaco has particularly impacted healthcare access. The bundled health insurance offerings represent the first formal healthcare coverage for most participants, addressing a significant gap in Ghana's insurance market.

The "buy now, pay daily" model directly tackles smartphone affordability challenges that exclude millions from digital banking, e-commerce, and mobile financial services. This financing approach enables customers to access devices that would otherwise require months of savings.

Strategic Market Entry and Expansion Timeline

M-KOPA entered Ghana's market methodically in 2021 with just 30 agents operating around Accra. The company reached 100,000 customers and unlocked approximately $10 million in digital credit by the end of 2023, when it officially launched nationwide operations.

During the same period, M-KOPA secured $250 million in debt and equity funding to accelerate expansion across Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and Uganda. By 2025, the company reported onboarding a new customer somewhere in Africa every nine seconds.

The Ghana operation demonstrates how technology-enabled financing solutions can address fundamental barriers to digital inclusion. M-KOPA's model shows that smartphone access, when combined with essential services, creates measurable economic and social impact for underserved populations.

The company's success in Ghana positions it as a significant player in Africa's digital transformation, particularly in markets where traditional financing mechanisms fail to serve low-income populations effectively.
